Day 1: Rongai Gate to First Cave Camp

• Elevation: 1950m to 2600m
• Distance: 8km
• Time: 4 hours
• Habitat: Montane Forest

Begin your trek from Rongai Gate, winding through picturesque cornfields and tranquil pine woodlands. Camp for the night at First Cave (2600m).

Day 2: First Cave to Kikelewa Cave

• Elevation: 2600m to 3600m
• Distance: 9km
• Time: 6-7 hours
• Habitat: Moorland

Ascend towards Kibo, passing Second Cave (3450m) along the way. Reach Kikelewa Cave (3600m) and enjoy expansive views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Overnight at Third Cave Camp.

Day 3: Kikelewa Cave to Mawenzi Tarn

• Elevation: 3600m to 4330m
• Distance: 6km
• Time: 4 hours
• Habitat: Moorland

Embark on a short but steep climb over grassy hills, rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn (4330m) for acclimatization and relaxation.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn

• Elevation: 4330m
• Acclimatization Day

Spend an additional day at Mawenzi Tarn for acclimatization. Explore the surrounding area, hike, and rest to prepare for the ascent.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Campsite

• Elevation: 4330m to 4750m
• Distance: 4km
• Time: 3 hours
• Habitat: Alpine desert

Traverse the lunar desert landscape of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo. Reach Kibo Campsite (4750m) for rest and preparation for summit day.

Day 6: Kibo Campsite to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

• Elevation: 4750m to 5895m (and down to 3720m)
• Distance: 6km ascent / 16km descent
• Time: 6-8 hours ascent / 4-5 hours descent
• Habitat: Stone scree and ice-capped summit / Moorlands

Start early at 23:30 for the challenging ascent. Reach Uhuru Peak (5895m), the highest point in Africa. Descend to Horombo Hut (3720m) for the night.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

• Elevation: 3720m to 1980m
• Distance: 20km
• Time: 5-7 hours
• Habitat: Moorlands

Descend through scenic moorlands to Marangu Gate. Receive summit certificates and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi, concluding your 7-day Rongai Route adventure.
